Research about The Bilingual Village

The Bilingual Village team has established an initial research agenda with two foci:

Qualitative Research Questions

How do second language learners apply the language they learn:

  • in the classroom to other contexts?
  • outside of the classroom to the classroom context?

Our team plans to collect student language samples in the classroom and during visits to Community Partner establishments. We will use Conversation Analysis to examine the transfer of knowledge and skills to address these questions.

Quantitative Research Questions

What is the relationship between participation in the Bilingual Village family and community engagement activities:

  • learners’ language and literacy achievement in their second language?
  • learners’ language and literacy achievement in their first language?

Our team plans to survey teachers and parents about Bilingual Village participation and use classroom-based assessment data for correlational analyses.

Research Partners

We are interested in working with others who would like to conduct research at our Florida Bilingual Village School and Community sites. We are also interested in partnering with researchers studying their local Bilingual VIllage sites. For information about existing Bilingual Village research or exploring partnerships for new research, please contact Joyce Nutta at joyce.nutta@ucf.edu.
